Staying at Château du Fuga, nestling in the hills near Saint Mézard, is like living in a fairytale. Within easy reach of Toulouse, the château was the perfect base from which to discover the surrounding villages and their exquisite culinary offerings, not to mention the local wines. Enjoying an Armagnac as the sun set and dining by candlelight on one of the many terraces made us feel like royalty.

It's impossible not to smile in the Gers. In the heart of Gascony, this land is green and gentle, with hills, rivers, Armagnac, ducks, village squares with arcades and sturdy people strolling around just a few hours out of step with the rest of France. Given the feudal atmosphere, the château is part of the landscape. Few are more sumptuous than Château du Feuga, near Condom, which sleeps 13 people. Surrounded by 42 hectares, it's the kind of place that ordinary people pay to visit, not to stay in.
